Jo Riley Counselling

Jo Riley MBACP
Hello and a warm welcome to my practice. I wonder what brings you here today?

Sometimes, life can seem overwhelming. Our feelings about events and relationships – past, present and future – can be bewildering, painful, all-consuming. Problems can seem insurmountable. We can feel stuck and afraid, and that’s a lonely place to be.
I am interested in every client at every stage and transition of their life. Your reasons for coming to therapy will be yours alone; your story is unique. I will respect that.
To help resolve whatever brings you to counselling, I offer you confidential, accepting, empathetic support. You hold the answers; our work together will illuminate them.

What is therapy?
It is a gift to yourself. An opportunity to unburden and unpick; to unravel those parts of your story and yourself that feel difficult. A freedom to talk about your innermost feelings to someone with professional training, who will listen without judgment and for whose reaction you need not feel responsible. Therapy is hard but rewarding work; it can be uncomfortable but revelatory; painful but valuable. It is a serious undertaking - but it doesn’t have to be humourless. There may well be tears but there will almost certainly be laughter too. Key to it all is the strength and depth of the relationship we build between us.

My therapeutic approach is grounded in connection, compassion and respect. I bring warmth, empathy, and intelligence to the therapy room, and provide my clients with a safe, respectful and supportive environment. I work with imagination and insight, wit and wisdom, honesty and humour.
How I work
I am a qualified integrative therapist, meaning that I have been trained in several different counselling and psychotherapeutic approaches. These approaches include Person-Centred, Existential, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis. I work collaboratively and facilitatively with each client to create a tailored approach. Largely, our work will be through talking, but we may also work creatively or with somatics (breath and body work) and mindfulness.

I work with adults facing a wide range of difficulties, including depression, anxiety, stress, bereavement, loss and relationship issues. I am experienced in working with clients with a background of trauma and domestic abuse. I have a particular interest in infertility and IVF. You may be struggling with relocation, parenting, caring, or facing redundancy, divorce, an empty nest or retirement. You may be dealing with something from your past that is inhibiting the way your live your life now, or you may feel stuck, numb or lost.

In addition to my professional training, my practice draws on a wealth of experience from my business career in HR, consultancy and teaching. I have worked in global corporates, SMEs and in the charity sector, and relocated several times within the UK and abroad. After moving to Cornwall in 2003, I founded and ran my own retail company before retraining as a counsellor.

FAQs
Who do you work with?
I work with adults aged 18 and over.
How do your Sessions work?
Ideally, we will meet once a week at a regular time. Of course, there will be occasions where we will need to be flexible to accommodate changes to our schedules.

Sessions last 60 minutes. There is no set number of sessions, nor is there a time limit on therapy. We will regularly review whether and how you want to continue.

What are your Fees?
Sessions cost £55.

Should you need to cancel or rearrange, I ask for 48 hours’ notice. Any sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice will be charged for, unless we can rearrange to a time that suits us both.

Payment for your first session is in advance by bank transfer; thereafter, payment can be made by card.

What if I have some questions?
Finding the right therapist can be a daunting task. I offer a free, no-obligation chat of up to 20 minutes to discuss what brings you to therapy, what you are hoping for and how I can help. This can be by telephone or online.

There is no commitment at this point. If you decide you'd like to work with me, you can book your first session. I will then send you details of the arrangements, the counselling contract and privacy policy.
In our first meeting, we will discuss in more detail your current situation, as well as the practicalities of how we will work together, including confidentiality.
How do I contact you?
You can reach me via email hello@jorileycounselling.co.uk or telephone: 07832 276138
What about confidentiality?
I take confidentiality very seriously. It is central to our work together. I abide by the BACP Ethical Framework and am registered with the ICO.
Best Practice?
To keep my practice up-to-date, I attend regular supervision and complete Continuous Professional Development training on an ongoing basis as required by the BACP.
What if I need help right now?
I cannot offer emergency support.
